PREVER International Awards

The General Council of Industrial Relations and Labour Sciences of Spain (CGRICT) is a recognised statutory professional body, equivalent in standing to a Royal Chartered Institution, representing the professional colleges
of Industrial Relations and Labour Sciences across Spain. Through its Honours and Awards Committee, the
PREVER Commission, the CGRICT confers its own system of distinctions — Medals, Encomiendas and Honorary
Diplomas — upon individuals and organisations of exceptional merit. These honours follow the protocol and
nomenclature of civil orders of merit and represent the highest distinction the Council may confer, in recognition
of outstanding contribution to occupational safety and health, labour sciences, and the advancement of society.
Orders of Civil Merit — Origin and Meaning
Civil orders of merit are official distinctions conferred by a State to honour individuals — national or foreign —
who have rendered extraordinary services in civilian life: in science, culture, diplomacy, public administration,
or service to society. Their roots lie in the medieval Orders of Chivalry, which were originally military and
religious in nature. Over centuries, monarchies transformed them into instruments of civil recognition, valuing
personal merit above lineage. A landmark moment was the creation of Spain’s Order of Charles III in 1771,
which formally enshrined the principle of merit as the basis for distinction.
Today, these decorations carry no financial reward — only social prestige, protocol honours, and the right to
wear the insignia at official and ceremonial occasions.
The Encomienda (Commander’s Cross for Distinguished Services)
An intermediate grade within a civil order, awarded in recognition of significant merit or distinguished service.
Its insignia is a cross or jewel of the order suspended from a ribbon worn around the neck — known as a
corbata — or, for women, pinned to the left shoulder in a bow. It is the first grade that permits a neck insignia,
placing it above standard chest medals in protocol hierarchy.
The Encomienda con Placa (Commander’s Cross with Star for Distinguished Services)
A superior grade to the Encomienda, generally limited to a fixed number of living holders, conferring greater
institutional prestige. It carries two insignia worn simultaneously: the neck cross of the Encomienda, and a
radiant star — typically in gold or silver — bearing the emblem of the order, worn on the left breast. In the
hierarchy of Spanish civil orders such as the Order of Isabella the Catholic or the Order of Civil Merit, it ranks
immediately below the Grand Cross, reserved for the highest levels of state and exceptional lifelong service.

The General Council of Industrial Relations and Labor Sciences (CGRICT), aware of the importance of occupational risk prevention in the world of Industrial Relations, created a series of awards in 1998 called «PREVER,» based on the Spanish saying «it is better to foresee what has not happened than to argue about what has happened.» Thanks to the collaboration of the General Directorates of Labor and Occupational Risk Prevention of the different Autonomous Communities, the National Institute of Safety and Hygiene at Work, and the European Agency for Safety and Health, year after year, they have become a benchmark in occupational risk prevention in our nation and the European Union.

This award is presented annually in the following categories:

Individual, to active individuals who stand out for their track record in the implementation and dissemination of occupational risk prevention in our country.

Special Recognitions to individuals who have played a significant role in the field of Occupational Health and Safety, or have performed specific work of particular importance.

PRL/CSR to entities that implement preventive policies within their CSR policies.

Companies and Institutions, to entities that stand out for their track record and good work in the field of Occupational Risk Prevention.

International, to individuals, institutions, or companies from other countries that stand out for their track record and good work in the field of Occupational Risk Prevention.

PREVER Awards – USA Chapter: First-Time Recognition at ICA International Symposium 2026

26th Edition of the PREVER Awards

The General Council of Industrial Relations and Labor Sciences (CGRICT), aware of the importance of occupational risk prevention in the world of Industrial Relations, proceeded in 1998 to create distinctions called «PREVER», in relation to the meaning of the Spanish saying «it is better to foresee what has not arrived than to argue about what has passed», which thanks to the collaboration of the General Directorates of Labor and Occupational Risk Prevention of the different Autonomous Communities, the National Institute of Safety and Hygiene at Work, the Autonomous Institutes of Safety and Health at Work, the Latin American Association of Occupational Health (ALSO), the Official College of Professionals for Safety and Health at Work of Ecuador (COPSSTEC), National Association of Professionals in Health, Safety and Environment at Work (ASONAP), the General Council of Professionals for Safety and Health at Work of Spain (CGPSST), National Association of Engineering of Work Safety (ANEST); the Lusophone Forum on Safety and Health Engineering at Work (FoLESST); the ISSA and the ISSO, and year after year, they have become a benchmark in occupational risk prevention at the national and international levels.

This award is presented annually in the following categories:

INDIVIDUAL, to active individuals who have distinguished themselves for their track record in the implementation and dissemination of occupational risk prevention in our country.

COMPANIES AND INSTITUTIONS, to entities that stand out for their track record and good work in the field of occupational risk prevention.

INTERNATIONAL, to individuals, institutions, or companies from other countries that stand out for their track record and good work in the field of occupational risk prevention.

FESVIAL, to individuals, institutions, or companies that have distinguished themselves in the implementation of effective prevention policies in the area of ​​occupational road safety.

IDUE-UDIMA, awarded to individuals, institutions, or companies that have excelled in the implementation of effective prevention policies in the field of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) technology.

ESGINNOVA, awarded to individuals, institutions, or companies that have excelled in the implementation of effective prevention policies in the field of OHS technology.

PREVSIS, awarded to individuals, institutions, or companies that have excelled in the implementation of effective prevention policies in the field of OHS technology.

R&D&i (National and International). Awarded to individuals, institutions, or companies in recognition of innovation and design as essential factors for increasing occupational health and safety, as well as for providing quality of life for workers.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION, awarded to individuals who have played a relevant role in the field of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), or have performed specific work of particular importance.

The candidates are nominated by the previous year’s award winners, the General Directorates of Labor and Occupational Risk Prevention of the various Autonomous Communities, the Regional Institutes of Occupational Health and Safety, and the entities with a collaboration agreement with the CGRICT, to a Joint Committee of the CGRICT, known as the PREVER Committee, which ultimately awards the prizes each year.

Likewise, in 1985, the CGRICT, to recognize excellence in the field of labor sciences, created the Industrial Relations and Labor Sciences Medals in the following categories: Cross of Distinguished Service and Gold Medal for Professional Merit in its Red, Red and Yellow, Yellow, and International distinctions, awarded to individuals and entities with an outstanding and brilliant career in relation to the purposes of this General Council and related to Industrial Relations, Labor Sciences, Social Sciences, Occupational Risk Prevention, Emergencies, State Security Forces and Bodies and the Armed Forces, Justice, and teaching.

This year, we are holding the 27th edition in Madrid, recognizing and awarding prizes to companies, institutions, and professionals who make the world of work a little safer every day.
